Blu-ray review | The Wolverine – Hugh Jackman’s razor-clawed mutant superhero is big in Japan

A fan favourite in the first three X-Men movies, Hugh Jackman’s razor-clawed mutant superhero is back for an exciting standalone adventure that gets a tremendous boost from its exotic Japanese setting. Decades after surviving the 1945 nuclear bombing of Nagasaki as an America PoW, Jackman’s Wolverine, aka James Logan, goes back to Japan and ends up on the run with a billionaire industrialist’s beautiful granddaughter, fending off hordes of Yakuza gangsters and ninja warriors at almost every turn. With one standout scene taking place atop a hurtling bullet train, the scenes of combat and flight are terrific, though the action does get overly protracted towards the end when the hero goes toe to toe with a giant robot. But the film’s two female leads are both superb, with Tao Okamoto’s drop-dead gorgeous heiress proving a beguiling love interest and Rila Fukushima’s drop-dead cool ninja chick making a captivating foil for Jackman’s bewhiskered battler.

Released on 3-Disc 3D Blu-ray Unleashed Extended Edition, Blu-ray and DVD by Fox UK Home Entertainment on Monday 18th November.

The Wolverine Unleashed Extended Edition includes 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray extended cut with director audio commentary, Blu-ray theatrical cut with special features.
